Tanna
appartient à la
partie centrale de l'arc des Nouvelles- Hébrides agée
de 4 à 6 Millions d'années, qui s'étend
des îles Banks (au Nord) à l'îlot Hunter
(au Sud). Elle repose sur la partie sud de l'arc où la
vitesse de subduction est d'environ 118 mm/an en valeur moyenne
par année.
L'activité volcanique de l'île a commencé il y a environ
3 Millions d'années avec la formation de la série de Green Hill,
elle se limite aujourd'hui au complexe de Yenkahé dont la partie ouest
est occupée par le volcan Yasur. |

Tanna
island is part of the central arc of the New Hebrides. This
is a 4 to 6 million years old island chain, spanning from
Banks islands in the north to the small islet of Hunter in
the south. Tanna Island is located in the southern part of
the Arc, where the rate of convergence is about 118 mm/year.
The volcanic activity of this island which started
about 3 million years ago with the Green Hill series, is limited today to the
Yenkahe complex of which the volcano Yasur forms the western part. |
