New Caledonia
Our research projects focus on ocean and atmosphere dynamics around New Caledonia and the southwest Pacific region. Our objective is to understand the downscaling processes of climate variations in the region and the impacts of these changes on issues relevant to island societies.

RESEARCH DESCRIPTION AND MAIN RESULTS

SCIENCE
  • Mesoscale simulation of tropical cyclones in the South Pacific
  • Mesoscale atmospheric simulations around New Caledonia
  • Ocean climate and biogeochemistry of the southwest Pacific

  • TOOLS
  • Development of regional oceanic and atmospheric models
  • Development of relocatable Operational forecast systems

  • SPONSORS AND PROJECTS

Besides our IRD internal support, four specific projects are externally funded for 2007/2008:
  • ZoNeCo : tuna/environment relations.
Project title: "Impact of ecological conditions on seasonal and interannual variability".
  • ANR : Climate and Cyclones.
Project title: "Vulnerability of the South Pacific islands to tropical cyclones altered by ENSO and climate change".
  • PREVIMER : operational oceanography.
Project title: "Experimental operational system of oceanic and meteorological surveillance and forecast for the lagoon and oceanic New Caledonia region". Visit our "Forecast and Survey" website
  • SPIRALES : building a parallel computer for Noumea.
